First-Ever Jazz Combos Showcase at Gustavus Sunday Posted on March 21st, 2015 by

DSC_0065Under the direction of first-year jazz studies director Dave Stamps, five jazz combos from the Department of Music will present a showcase of their work on Sunday, March 22 in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall. This jazz performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public at no charge.

The Jazz Guitar Ensemble will open the concert led by guitarist and composer Jim McGuire. They will perform works by Sonny Rollins and Thelonius Monk, as well as two charts by Mr. McGuire, Bag of Blues and Latin Sketch. The Frost (yur-on) Combo will follow with Boplicity by Gill Evans and Miles Davis, Blues Dance by Al Cobine and Haitian Fight Song by Charles Mingus. The Crown Combo will continue Sunday’s performance with Ladybird by Tadd Dameron and On Green Dolphin Street by Bronislau Kaper.

Director John Engebretson will bring the Yellow and Blues Combo to the stage next for performances of John Coltrane’s Impressions and Benny Golson’s Killer Joe, and Sunday’s Jazz Combos Showcase will conclude with the Young Lions of the North Jazztet. They will perform Joshua by Victor Feldman and the Prelude No. 4 2/3 in f-double sharp minor.

The Jazz Combos Showcase will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall. The performance is open to the public. Tickets are not required.
