Coming Weekend Concludes Gustavus Recital Season Posted on May 14th, 2015 by

G-PinOne more busy weekend of recitals and concerts concludes the end-of-the year performances in music at Gustavus. These events will be presented in Björling Recital Hall May 15 – 17 and will include the annual G Sharp, Vasa Wind Orchestra and Brassworks! spring concerts along with junior and senior recitals in flute, clarinet, guitar, saxophone and voice. In all, over 100 Gustavus student-musicians will participate in making music on this final event weekend of the year. Each performance is open to the public at no charge.

  • Friday, May 15: The men’s a cappella ensemble G Sharp will present its 2015 finale concert at 7:30 p.m. Always a favorite, G Sharp will present a signature concert of varied compositional styles, classical and contemporary, with traditional arrangements and close vocal harmonies.
  • Saturday, May 16: Conductor Karrin Meffert-Nelson leads the Vasa Wind Orchestra, and chamber ensembles from within the ranks of the orchestra, through its spring concert at 1:30 p.m. in Björling. The VWO’s program includes works by Bach, Vaughan Williams, Percy Grainger, Jack Stamp and others.
  • Saturday, May 16: Senior Cameron Jarvis, tenor, and Christopher Bram, classical guitar, combine efforts to present their senior recital at 3:30 p.m. Their program includes works that range from Handel, Brahms and Fauré, to Tárrega, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and Hammerstein and Kern. The duo will be accompanied by pianist Bonnie Jorgensen and assisted by the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band’s rhythm section.
  • Saturday, May 16: Saturday’s schedule concludes at 7:30 p.m. with a joint recital by Erin Grev, flute and Rudi Thompson, clarinet, accompanied by Szu-Ling Wu and Emily Rudquist on piano. This junior recital includes works by Finzi, Poulenc, Hindemith, von Weber and John Rutter.
  • Sunday, May 17: Daniel Felton, saxophone, opens Sunday’s schedule at 1:30 p.m. with his senior recital accompanied by pianist Ben Marti. Daniel’s program opens with Darius Milhaud’s Scaramouche and includes additional works by Heiden, Robert Schumann, Gershwin, Jones and Coltrane. The recital ends with the assistance of a small ensemble in the performance of the recitalist’s arrangement of John Prince Kee’s Thank You Lord (He Did It All).
  • Sunday, May 17: 3:30 p.m. brings the annual Brassworks! concert to the Björling stage and includes performances by the Gustavus Brass Choir (Heidi Johanna Miller, conductor), the Trumpet Quintet, the Trombone Quartet, the Christ Chapel Brass (James Patrick Miller, coach) and the Björling Low Brass Six (Trygve Skaar, conductor).
  • Sunday, May 17: Kyle Bennett, guitar, will present his senior recital at 7:30 p.m. Kyle will be joined by members of the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band in a recital that includes works by Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Jimmy Van Heusen, Joseph Kosma and Billy Strayhorn.

This weekend of concerts and recitals will be presented in Björling Recital Hall at no charge. The public is cordially invited to attend.
