Patrick Scully presents Walt Whitman in an intimate theatre-going experience Posted on September 4th, 2017 by

The Gustavus Adolphus College Theatre and Dance Departments is proud to host Patrick Scully’s Leaves of Grass – Illuminated  for an intimate showing at 7:30 p.m. on September 16 in Kresge Dance Studio. With only 60 tickets available for the public, the performance provides a unique up-close and personal experience for audience members.

Scully’s solo performance summons the spirit of America’s great poet, Walt Whitman, revealing Whitman’s many sides: from the furtive—changing genders to “straighten things up”, to the fierce—defying the censors and getting banned in Boston. Scully has been described as “the perfect caretaker for Whitman’s legacy” by the Minneapolis StarTribune.

This show is the product of over 10 years of research and development. A large cast version of the show opened in Minneapolis to critical acclaim in 2014. Scully developed that version into a one man show in 2015, and premiered Leaves of Grass – Illuminated in New York City and Minneapolis in 2016. During the 2017-2018 school year, Scully is touring 24 communities in Minnesota, with support from the Minnesota State Arts Board’s Legacy Funds.

Tickets cost $5 for general admission, and Gustavus students, faculty, and staff receive one free complimentary ticket. Tickets can be ordered online or in person at the information desk in the lower level of the Jackson Campus Center.
