Gustavus Wind Orchestra Departs for 2019 Tour Posted on March 26th, 2019 by

The Gustavus Wind Orchestra departs for its 2019 Minnesota Tour on Friday. The band will spend 10 days performing in schools and churches across the state from Rochester to Hermantown. A complete list of tour stops is below.

This year the theme of the program is “Solitude” and conductor James Patrick Miller says it acknowledges both the peaceful nature of being alone, as well as the potential for pain due to isolation. The repertoire list features classic wind band pieces such as Percy Aldridge Grainger’s “Molly on the Shore” and Ottorino Respighi’s “Huntingtower Ballad” as well as more recent works including John Mackey’s “Frozen Cathedral”.

The program also features several student soloists, conductors, and performers. Senior dance honors and psychological science major Mia Massaro choreographed a dance for Warren Benson’s “The Solitary Dancer” and will perform it with the band.  She will be joined in the spotlight by Charlie Barnhouse ’19 (saxophone), Oran Clay ’19 (tuba), Andrew DeLuca ’19 (guest conductor), and Emma Silber ’19 (guest conductor).

Founded in 1878, the Gustavus Wind Orchestra is the oldest touring ensemble at Gustavus, performing both domestically and internationally. The band regularly collaborates with well-known composers and conductors, commissioning and premiering new works. Previously, the group has traveled traveled to Poland, the Czech and Slovak Republics, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Sweden, and Norway.

All performances are free of charge, no ticket required.
