TEMPTATION OF THE IDLER 1498

The Hillstrom Museum of Art at Gustavus Adolphus College is pleased to bring Connecticut collector Elizabeth Maxwell-Garner to the campus to present a public lecture titled “New Secrets in Dürer’s Art” on Sunday, October 16, 2011. Ms. Maxwell-Garner’s lecture will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Wallenberg Auditorium, located in the Nobel Hall of Science. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Maxwell-Garner, whose collection of prints by the great German master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) is on display at the Hillstrom Museum of Art in an exhibition titled A Collector’s Passion for Dürer’s Secrets: the MAGJEKL Collection, will discuss her observations that have arisen from an intense study of the artist.  Her passionate devotion has led her to systematic examination and methodical consideration of Dürer and his work that has drawn on the expertise of prominent dealers and experts on the artist.

The collector’s close inspection of details of Dürer’s works has led her to perplexing discoveries, many of which appear never to have been reported in the literature on him.  She hypothesizes that some of his prints are interrelated, a concept little explored before, and that they often contain references to persons and events from Dürer’s life and times, some previously unrecognized.  The exhibition A Collector’s Passion for Dürer’s Secrets debuts Garner’s collection and features forty-three intaglio prints and woodblocks by the master, assembled only since 2006 by the Connecticut collector.

Garner will also present an informal public gallery talk related to the exhibition, in the Hillstrom Museum of Art on Monday, October 17 starting at 7:30 p.m.

Garner’s lecture and gallery talk are free and open to the public.
