Artist Series Brings Guitarist Robert Gruca to Gustavus Friday
In the tradition of bringing artists of world renown to the St. Peter campus, the Gustavus Artist Series is pleased to present classical guitarist Robert Gruca in concert in Jussi Björling Recital Hall on Friday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m. Friday's recital is part of a day-long Artist Series residency by the guitarist that includes a lecture/demonstration, open to the public, in Björling at 2:30 p.m. Tickets for Friday's concert by Robert Gruca are available online at gustavustickets.com or by calling the Gustavus Ticket Center at 507-933-7590.
Family Weekend Features Department of Music
The annual community celebration called Family Weekend at Gustavus Adolphus College, October 11-13, has a little bit of everything for family, alumni and friends, including attendance at movies, workshops and panels, participation in trivia and treasure hunts, athletic events and a murder/mystery dinner. However, the tradition of Family Weekend at Gustavus would not be complete without a Sunday of non-stop music featuring ten of the College's music ensembles. In addition are two special additions to the schedule this year: the Gustavus Artist Series presentation of internationally-renowned classical guitarist Robert Gruca on Friday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m., and a Department of Music faculty recital by saxophonist John Engebretson on Saturday, October 12 at 3:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall.
Engebretson Saxophone Recital Set for Saturday
The Department of Music at Gustavus welcomes alumnus and adjunct instructor of music John Engebretson in a faculty saxophone recital on Saturday, October 12, beginning at 3:30 p.m. For this faculty recital in Jussi Björling Recital Hall, Mr. Engebretson is joined by two colleagues in the Department of Music, pianist Esther Wang and clarinetist Karrin Meffert-Nelson. The performance is free and open to the public.
Le Grande Bande to Present Haydn and Handel Sunday
The debut solo performance of Le Grande Bande & Chorus (LGBC), a local nonprofit orchestra and chorus established in June 2011, will be performed in Jussi Björling Recital Hall on Sunday, October 6 beginning at 7:00 p.m. Directed by Michael Asmus, a 2013 Gustavus graduate, Le Grande Bande will include student musicians from Gustavus Adolphus College, members of the Mankato Symphony Orchestra, and other musicians from the area. The concert, which will not include the Chorus, will feature the Sinfonia overture from the Armida Symphony No. 87 by Josef Haydn and a performance of George Fredric Handel’s famous Water Music.

Gustavus Presents the Rose Ensemble’s Roots of Bluegrass Tour
Moving from their traditional repertoire to the traditional music of America, The Rose Ensemble of St. Paul is opening its 8th annual greater Minnesota concert tour, The Roots of Bluegrass, A Journey through America's Folk, Old-time, and Gospel Traditions, with a Gustavus Artist Series presentation on Thursday, October 3 in Christ Chapel. Guest Cello & Piano Recital Sunday at Gustavus
The Department of Music at Gustavus is pleased to bring guest 'cellist Nickolai Kolarov and pianist Rebekah Richards to the Jussi Björling Hall stage on Sunday, September 29. Performing works by Beethoven, Barber, Rorem, Kodaly, Balyozov and Zlatev-Tcherkin, the duo of Kolarov and Richards will present both combined and solo works. This performance begins at 1:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Andy Juhl & Bluestem Players in Björling Saturday
Musician and song-writer Andy Juhl, a 2002 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, will return to the campus Saturday, September 21 for a concert with his band, the Bluestem Players, at 7:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. This is the first performance by the northwest Iowa native since his graduation in 2002. With a well-deserved and growing reputation as both a classic folk and folk rock musician, Juhl has presented his music around the Midwest. He has four CDs on the market with one more on the way. Saturday's performance is sponsored by the Office of Fine Arts at Gustavus and is free and open to the public.
Gustavus Opens Performance Season With Brandenburg No. 5
To celebrate the beginning of a new performance season at Gustavus Adolphus College, the Department of Music is pleased to present a concert featuring one of the most respected compositions of the Baroque Era, Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, on Friday, September 20, 2013. Performed by a chamber ensemble comprised of Gustavus music faculty and their students and conducted by guest conductor Henry Charles Smith, this opening performance of the season will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the College's Jussi Björling Recital Hall. The performance is free and the public is cordially invited to attend.
