Pianists Yumiko Oshima-Ryan and Esther Wang, the newest members of Gustavus Adolphus College’s Department of Music, will present a Duo Piano Recital on Friday, March 11, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall. This faculty recital is free and open to the public.
Oshima-Ryan and Wang joined the department in August 2004 following the retirements of long-time professors and pianists Helen Baumgartner and John McKay. This recital marks the first time they have collaborated for a full recital and includes works for solo, as well as duo, piano.
The program opens with Mozart’s SONATA FOR TWO PIANOS IN D MAJOR and features both pianists. Professor Wang then continues with two solo performances, Beethoven’s SONATA IN F SHARP MAJOR and the VIOLIN PARTITA NO. 3, written by J. S. Bach and arranged for piano by Sergei Rachmaninov. The program continues with solo performances by Oshima-Ryan of Frederic Chopin’s BALLADE IN F MAJOR and ETUDE IN A MINOR. The duo joins forces once again to complete the program with a performance of Akira Miyoshi’s five-movement JAPANESE FOLK SONGS.
Friday’s performance is free and open to the public. A reception for these two new members of the department will be held in the recital hall lobby following the performance.
