Since 1988, the Department of Music at Gustavus has invited high school band directors to nominate their best band members to participate in the Gustavus Honor Band. In the early days, the honor band consisted of students from schools from around the region of southern Minnesota and the metro area. This year’s band is one of the largest in festival history and includes 105 students from 51 schools in the four state area. Rehearsals begin on Sunday, followed by sectional and ensemble rehearsals and clinics throughout the day on Monday, making the event of great musical and artistic significance for these high school musicians. The 2007 Honor Band Festival concludes on Monday with the festival concert featuring the Gustavus Honor Band followed by the Gustavus Wind Orchestra. Both ensembles are under the direction of Douglas Nimmo, Director of Bands at Gustavus and artistic director of the festival.
