The Vasa Wind Orchestra, Karrin Meffert-Nelson, conductor and the Gustavus Wind Orchestra, James Patrick Miller, conductor, will combine efforts on Saturday, March 21 to present their spring concerts in Bjorling Recital Hall. The program will open at 1:30 p.m. with the Vasa ensemble and conclude with the Gustavus Wind Orchestra. Tickets are not required for this concert in Bjorling Recital Hall.
Conductor Karrin Meffert-Nelson and the Vasa Wind Orchestra will open Saturday’s concert with the Symphonic Overture by Charles Carter, followed by Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Sea Songs and Carson Robison’s Variations on Barnacle Bill the Sailor with bass trombone soloist Scott Moore. The ensemble will continue with Percy Grainger’s Ye Banks and Braes O’ Bonnie Doon and conclude their half with Sketches on a Tudor Psalm by Fisher Tull.
After a short break to reset the Bjorling stage, the Gustavus Wind Orchestra and Conductor James Patrick Miller will open with a 3-movement work by Gustav Holst, the First Suite in Eb Major for Military Band. Guest soloist Melissa Morey, horn, will join the ensemble to perform the 2nd movement of the Concerto for Horn and Wind Ensemble by Dana Wilson. The GWO will end the concert with Percy Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy, a work written shortly before the famed Australian composer and pianist traveled to Gustavus and toured with the then Gustavus Adolphus Concert Band.
Saturday’s combined concert by the Vasa Wind Orchestra and the Gustavus Wind Orchestra will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall. Admission is free.
