Sydney Sutherland is a Theatre Honors major and a minor in Arts Administration and English from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
We asked Sydney about her time at Gustavus and her goals for the future.
What are your plans for the future?
SS: “I plan to travel as an assistant stage manager and stage manager. So far I’ll be traveling to Texas and Virginia to work professionally through the holidays.”
What will you miss most about theatre at Gustavus?
SS: “I will miss the tight-knit community. It truly felt like a strong ensemble of actors and technicians and we would see each other everyday in classes, work, the steamery and rehearsals.”
What’s a favorite memory you have from studying theatre at Gustavus?
SS: “I loved spending time in the costume shop day to day as an assistant stage manager liaison.”
How have you grown in your time at Gustavus?
SS: “I developed a strong appreciation for all the wonderful work each design department does.”
What do you look forward to most about life after Gustavus?
SS: “I am looking forward to working on a wide range of theatre, new works, Shakespeare, musicals, and maybe opera.”
What’s one piece of advice you’d give high school students considering Gustavus?
SS: “Always advocate for yourself. ”
What is the most interesting class you’ve taken at Gustavus and why?
SS: “I loved experiments in design! It was just a lot of fun. ”
