Rose Han Fine Arts Feature

Han ‘25 is very involved in fine arts at Gustavus through studio art and as a tutor for the digital arts department. A Junior environmental Studies and Studio Art double major from Staples, MN. Rose  Han is currently doing an Independent Study with Art Professor Nicolas Darcourt this semester which involves a combination of sketching, mixtures of 3D and 2D artwork and making her own ceramic sculptures and tiles.

Han originally came to Gustavus as an Environmental Studies major, and she decided to take beginning drawing in her first year spring semester to gain some art experience to eventually do eco-friendly architecture.

What Han did not expect was that she had a natural knack for it, which surprised her since she never took any other art classes before coming to Gustavus. “I declared my studio art major double major after taking only one class,” said Han.

Han says her favorite memory of the art department so far is the junior art exhibition last spring. The Junior exhibition is the biggest course in the art department besides the senior seminar, focusing on how to price artwork, how to write about it (an artist bio) and also how to apply for and set up an exhibition.

“Seeing myself and the other artists work for a full semester on their art and seeing it match with their writing and learning was very inspiring,” said Rose.

Han felt like the exhibition itself and the application process was a good stepping stone in helping to showcase her artwork. Han did not expect to get accepted to an emerging artist exhibition when submitting the assignment. “I just submitted the application as part of an assignment for one of my classes and I got an email saying that I was chosen and accepted for a local summer exhibition!

The Emerging Artists exhibition at the Hutchinson Center for the Arts starts on July 23rd and goes till September 13th.
