Applause for the Cause

A standing ovation for those who gave to Gustavus performing arts in February.

The “debut performance” of Applause for the Cause, a giving event, raised more than $216,000 from 432 donors in just 36 hours. Gifts from alumni through the decades and from around the globe—as well as gifts from parents, grandparents, and friends who love the Gustavus performing arts—fueled the two-day giving extravaganza.

Donors were able to choose where their gift would make the most impact. That included international tours for musical ensembles to show the world to Gustavus student performers, Gustavus Theatre for essential funding for learning opportunities through productions and equipment, and Gustavus Dance Company to support guest artists who bring new ways of performance and thinking about performance to the Hill.

Gifts will also support jazz guest artists, new Gustavus Choir robes, and new musical instruments. Plus, gifts will support two new endowments honoring beloved late professors: The Rob and Judy Gardner Equipment Endowment for Theatre and the Michele Rusinko Guest Artists Endowment for Dance.

And of course, funds will support Christmas in Christ Chapel, keeping the cherished Gustavus tradition strong.

Performing arts—through both the Music department and the Theatre & Dance department—are at the heart of a Gustavus liberal arts experience, where more than 400 students shine on stage and beyond. Says Ann Sponberg Peterson ’83, associate vice president for Advancement and “loyal bandie,” “We always enjoy surpassing a goal, especially when in partnership, and especially while learning new ways to support our students.”
