The Gustavus Department of Music is pleased to present the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra and its new Conductor Ruth Lin in a concert of All-American music on Sunday, November 14 beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. This concert of works by American composers George Whitefield Chadwick, Aaron Copland and Alan Hovhaness is free and open to the public.
For Sunday’s performance, Conductor Lin has chosen three works for the Gustavus Symphony. The concert opens with George Chadwick’s four-movement Symphonic Sketches followed by the “Orchestral Suite” from Aaron Copland’s opera, The Tender Land. The concert concludes with Symphony No. 2, Op. 132, “Mysterious Mountain,” by Alan Hovhaness.
Conductor Ruth Lu Lin is in her first year as director of the string program at Gustavus. She received her doctorate of music in orchestral conducting December 2009 from Northwestern University School of Music in Evanston, Ill. She had earned a bachelor of music degree from Northwestern University in music education and music technology in 2002 and a master’s degree in orchestral conducting in 2005. Lin served as director of orchestra studies and conducting at Iowa State University from 2007-2009. She possesses an extensive and impressive list of conducting experience, including the Iowa State University Orchestra, guest conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra, and conductor/founder of the Good Samaritan Symphony Orchestra.
Sunday’s Gustavus Symphony Orchestra concert with Conductor Ruth Lu Lin begins at 1:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. This performance of All-American music is free and open to the public.
