The 2005 Minnesota Valley Sommarfest season concludes Thursday, July 28, with performances by two of the area’s premier pianists, David Viscoli and John McKay, and Sommarfest’s Wind Orchestra, conducted by Douglas Nimmo. The finale concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on July 28 in Jussi Björling Recital Hall on the Gustavus Adolphus Campus. Tickets are available at the door.
The finale program continues with the celebration of the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of classical music’s most admired composers, but includes 20th century works by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. Pianists Viscoli and McKay open the evening with Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D major, K. 448. A wind octet then continues with Stravinsky’s Octet, led by Gustavus Wind Orchestra conductor Douglas Nimmo.
Following intermission, Viscoli and McKay return to the stage to present Stravinsky’s Sonata for Two Pianos. They are followed by the final work of the season performed by the Sommarfest Wind Orchestra, Mozart’s Serenade in E flat major for Woodwind Octet, K. 375.
Sommarfest’s finale concert is underwritten by the Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation and the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council. Tickets may be reserved by calling 507-933-7013 or may be purchased at the door prior to the concert.
