A set of three senior and junior student recitals fills the schedule on Sunday, April 17 at Jussi Björling Recital Hall on the Gustavus campus. The afternoon of music features Sarah Cartwright, piano and voice at 1:30 p.m., Jessica Gjerde, soprano at 3:30 p.m. and the combined talents of pianist Brit Barkholtz and saxophonist Andy Phillips at 7:30 p.m. All three recitals are free and open to the public.
Senior music major Sarah Cartwright opens the afternoon in Björling at 1:30 p.m. with a combined voice and piano recital. Her program includes two movements from Beethoven’s “Pathetique” sonata, along with works by Chopin and Bach. She continues with vocal selections by Henry Cowell and Gabriel Faure, before closing with a medley of Gershwin tunes, a selection by Britney Spears and an original composition titled Daisies. Sarah is accompanied by pianist Matt McFarlane and Sean Prichard, guitar, Mark Wamma, violin and Dempsey Schroeder, banjo.
At 3:30, music and English major Jessica Gjerde will present her senior voice recital accompanied by pianist Beth Winterfeldt. Jessica’s program opens with works by Mozart, Schubert and Handel. She then moves into 20th century compositions from Songs from a New World, The Color Purple and Ragtime. The recital will conclude with an arrangement by friend and fellow student Jonathan Monk ’11 of I Am Changing from Henry Krieger’s Dreamgirls.
The Sunday of music closes with the 7:30 p.m. joint recital by pianist Brit Barkholtz (music honors in composition) and alto saxophonist Andy Phillips (music education). Phillips and accompanist Beth Winterfeldt will open the recital with Paul Creston’s Sonata Op. 19 and Improvisation and Caprice by Eugene Bozza followed by Barkholtz’ performance of Chopin’s Waltz in A-flat Major and the Adagio cantibile movement of Beethoven’s “Pathetique” sonata. The recitalists will continue with works by Ryo Noda, Yann Tiersen and Henri Tomasi before concluding with Mozart’s Sonata No. 5 in G major for piano.
The three recitals on in Björling Recital Hall on Sunday, April 17 are free and open to the public. A reception for the musicians will be held in the recital hall lobby following each performance.
