Saturday Festivities Include Senior Honors Recital

As part the the 2011 Gustavus Adolphus College Honors Day celebration on Saturday, May 7, the Department of Music will present its annual Senior Honors Recital at 1:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. Five student musicians, in piano, voice and bassoon, have been selected to perform in the recital.

As part the the 2011 Gustavus Adolphus College Honors Day celebration on Saturday, May 7, the Department of Music will present its annual Senior Honors Recital at 1:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. Five student musicians, in piano, voice and bassoon, have been selected to perform in the recital.

The Senior Honors Recital will open with Samuel Grace, piano, from Waverly, Iowa, who will present the first movement from Sergei Prokoviev’s Sonata No. 2 in D Minor. Bassoonist Alexander Legeros will follow with Burrill Phillips’ Concert Piece accompanied by pianist Ben Marti. Legeros is a graduate of Edina High School. Brita Gilyard, mezzo-soprano from Plymouth, Minnesota, will then perform the Romanze aus “Rosamunde” by Franz Schubert, accompanied by pianist Samuel Grace.

Pianist Sarah Cartwright of Windom, Minnesota, will follow with three works for piano by Henry Cowell; Tides Manaunan, Aeolian Harp and Exultation. The final recitalist on the Honors Recital program is baritone Christopher Hall of Kenai, Alaska, who will sing three works accompanied by pianist Samuel Grace. Christopher will open with Barber’s The Monk and His Cat, follow with Tchaikovsky’s Pilgrim’s Song and conclude with Brahms’ Die Mainacht.

The Senior Honors Recital will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall on Saturday, May 7. The recital is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception for the musicians in the recital hall lobby.
