The Gustavus and Vasa Wind Orchestras’ fall concert in Christ Chapel on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College will be presented Friday, November 11, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Long-time conductor Douglas Nimmo is joined by the Vasa Wind Orchestra’s new conductor Karrin Meffert-Nelson for this performance in Christ Chapel which is free and open to the public.

This annual “Winds of Autumn” performance brings the College’s two wind orchestras to Christ Chapel for a combined concert of compositions written or arranged for concert band. The Vasa Wind Orchestra and Conductor Karrin Meffert-Nelson open the concert with Bill Locklear’s Let Us Rejoice: Fanfare & Hymn followed by a transcription of the William Byrd Suite by Gordon Jacobs and the Second Suite in F for Military Band by Gustav Holst.

Following a short break to reset the stage, the Gustavus Wind Orchestra will open the second half with John Alan Carnahan’s Centennial Celebration Fanfare and John Zdechlik’s Hats Off to Thee. The ensemble will continue with four movements from The Red Pony by iconic American composer Aaron Copland and will conclude the performance with the Danza De Los Duendes by Nancy Galbraith, a reference to the malicious goblin-like creatures (los duendes) of South American folklore.

Friday’s fall concert by the Gustavus and Vasa Wind Orchestras is free and open to the public. It begins at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel.
