The Department of Music at Gustavus is pleased to bring to the campus the Excelsior! Trio for a guest performance on Friday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. The trio includes Deb Harris, flute & alto flute, Russ Peterson, alto & soprano saxophone and Jay Hershberger, piano. The performance in Jussi Björling Recital Hall is free and open to the public.
Friday’s program opens with Chick Corea’s Spain, Russell Peterson’s Trio #2 for Flute, Alto Saxophone and Piano and two movements of Robert Mann’s Three Scenes from the Mountains. The Trio will continue the performance with Jennifer Higdon’s Dash, followed by Six Epigraphes Antiques by Claude Debussy and concludes with a second work by Russell Peterson, the Trio #1 for Flute, Alto Saxophone and Piano.
Although Excelsior! Trio was officially formed in 2009, Deb, Russ, and Jay, members of the music faculty at Concordia College in Moorhead, have been performing together on and off since 2001. Early on they discovered a deep appreciation for each others’ musical styles, technique, and artistic personalities and decided to form the professional ensemble. From Los Angeles and Cleveland, to Minneapolis and Athens, Georgia, audiences have enthusiastically responded to the high-energy music making of Excelsior! Trio. Friday’s performance at Gustavus is part of a 20-plus concert tour in the Midwest.
The Excelsior! Trio performance is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall on the Gustavus campus. The concert is sponsored by the Department of Music and is free and open to the public. A reception for the performers will follow the performance in the recital hall lobby.
