Vasa & Philharmonic Share Concert Sunday

The Department of Music will feature the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vasa Wind Orchestra in Concert on Sunday, May 6, as part of the Honors Weekend festivities. The ensembles are conducted by Justin Knoepfel and Karrin Meffert-Nelson and will feature as soloist, bassoonist Ann Pesavento. This performance, scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall, is open to the public at no charge.

The 17-member Gustavus Philharmonic, conducted by Justin Knoepfel, will open the concert with a performance of Percy Fletcher’s Suite for Strings and four movements from St. Paul’s Suite for String Orchestra by Gustav Holst.

For the second half of the program, the Vasa Wind Orchestra will move to the stage under the direction of Karrin Meffert-Nelson. The Vasa will begin its program with Three Moods for Band by Minnesota composer Stephen Paulus. Joined by bassoon soloist Ann Pesavento, the Vasa will continue its performance with Julius Fucik’s Der Alte Brummbar, and will close the concert with A Nordic Trilogy, three Scandinavian-themed works by Frank Erickson, Albert Oliver Davis and Alfred Reed.

Sunday’s joint concert by the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vasa Wind Orchestra is free and open to the public. The performance begins at 1:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall.
