The Gustavus campus will be delighted once again by the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra’s fall concert. The orchestra, conducted by Ruth Lin, will present its concert on Sunday, November 10 at 1:30 p.m. in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall. The concert includes guest performances by trumpet professor Steve Wright and first-year horn student Bailey Hilgren. Admission to the concert is free but donations will be encouraged for the non-profit Starfish Project.

For Sunday’s concert, the symphony will be accepting donations on behalf of the Starfish Project during the concert. The Starfish Project was inspired and developed by Gustavus Professor Lois Peterson in 2006. On a trip to South Africa and Namibia, Peterson was moved by the poverty and poor conditions of schools and orphanages for children there. Upon returning, she created the Project, a non-profit organization that collects clothing and school supplies to send to the children there. Members of the Gustavus Orchestra have visited these children when on tour in South Africa and are eager to help create positive change for these communities through donations and assistance.

The concert will commence with the performance of Aaron Copland’s “Down a Country Lane.” The orchestra will next play “Quiet City,” also by Aaron Copland, and featuring Steve Wright and Bailey Hilgren. The concert will conclude with the outstanding performance of all four movements of “Symphony no. 2 in D Major, Op. 731,” composed by Johannes Brahms.

The Gustavus Symphony Orchestra will perform their fall concert on Sunday, November 10 at 1:30 p.m. in Bjorling Recital Hall. They will be accepting donations for the Starfish Project; admission to the concert itself is free.
