Gustavus Choir and G Sharp member Gabriel Hanson, who double majors in vocal performance with honors and psychology, will perform his senior voice recital on April 12 in Björling Recital Hall at 3:30 p.m. The recital is free and open to the public.
A large repertoire will be presented in the recital, from Italian, French and German to English and Russian. Most of Gabe’s performances will be accompanied by Leah Rodmyre, who majored in psychology, minored in music, and graduated last semester. Gabe will start his recital off with “Il lacerato spirito” by Giuseppe Verdi. Next he will sing a song-cycle by Francis Poulenc titled “Le Bestiaire.” After that he will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “O, wie will ich triumphieren.”
Gabe’s first piece to be be sung in English will be “Ol’ Man River” by Jerome Kern, followed by William Herbert Jude’s “The Mighty Deep,” and the African American spiritual “Deep River” arranged by H. T. Burleigh. Michael Eastwood, bass and Andrew Kendall, harpsichord will join Gabe for “Quia fecit mihi magna” by Johann Sebastian Bach. The recital will continue with two movements from Richard Strauss’s 2 Gesänge, Op. 51 and three songs from Songs from The Plays of Shakespeare by Dick Hyman: “Winter (When Icicles Hang by the Wall),” “Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind,” and “Lawn As White As Driven Snow.” Gabe will continue with two works in Russian: Modest Mussorgsky’s “Song of the Flea” and “Song of the Volga Boatmen” arranged by Chaliapin and Koeneman.
The members of G Sharp will join Gabe for the final two pieces of the concert: “Salvation is Created” by Pavel Tchesnokov, which will be sung in Russian, and Nick Glennie-Smith’s “Mansions of the Lord.” Audiences will have a good selection to pick out their favorite pieces from the concert.
This Saturday, April 12, Gabe Hanson will sing at 3:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. This performance is free for the public to attend. A reception will follow the performance.
