The Theatre and Dance Department at Gustavus Adolphus College is proud to present the senior honors project Mendacity, devised and directed by theatre honors majors Comfort Dolo and Rob Ward. Mendacity will be performed in the Black Box theatre April 25 and 26 at 8:00 p.m. and April 27 at 2:00 p.m.
Mendacity traps you in a basement of a warehouse with two strangers: the unstable Gene (Rob Ward ’14) and the mysterious Mindy (Comfort Dolo ’14). As Gene and Mindy look for an escape they soon realize the danger is not what’s outside…but what’s inside.
Commenting on the past several months, Comfort Dolo chuckled, “Look how far we’ve come!”
When Dolo and Ward sat down in the Courtyard Café in the spring of 2013, they had the idea to perform an already-made play, but nothing fit their creative mindset. They decided to use the devising skills they had honed over the last four years to create a work of their very own.
Over the summer, they communicated and kept each other’s crazy ideas in check until they settled on the broad theme of “Secrets.” Dolo and Ward then started collecting secrets: friends’ secrets, secrets from the popular website PostSecret, Reddit and other sources. When the duo came across a particular secret concerning a wedding cake, two deceptive characters were born. From that, they relied on the use of improvisation, bringing more characters and scenes inspired by Tarantino films, Louis Armstrong, through improv, Dolo and Ward finally conceived a dark and suspenseful story.
Experience the thrill of the warehouse basement along with Mindy and Gene.
