What do you get when you put fairies, love and a magic, all-powerful flower together? Chaos. That, and the thrilling and epic story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, put on the grassy stage of the Linnaeus Arboretum by theatre professor Henry MacCarthy. This workshop version of Shakespeare’s classic story of love and unintended consequences features the work of more than 20 Gustavus students from theatre majors to first-time actors. Performances will be presented in the Linnaeus Arboretum and will begin at 7:00 p.m., May 15-18. Bring your own chairs or blankets, lawn seating only. Admission is free. Tickets are not required. In case of rain the performance will be cancelled.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream follows the love story of two Athenian couples as they fight against parents, meddlesome fairies and their own feelings in order to keep their love alive. The play does a wonderful job of incorporating even the seemingly smaller roles to create a magical environment that the audience will surely enjoy. From the moment the play begins, actors and audience alike are swept up in the supernatural land of the fairies and are privy to the innermost feelings of the Athenian citizens.
It is a mix of magic and reality with just a dash of pranks.
