Two ensembles from the Department of Music at Gustavus will join forces to present their spring concerts on Saturday, May 17, at 1:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. The Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Justin Knoepfel will open the concert followed by the Vasa Wind Orchestra, conducted by Karrin Meffert-Nelson. This performance in Björling Recital Hall will presented free to the public.
Conductor Justin Knoepfel and the 30-member Gustavus Philharmonic, will open the performance with Carl Nielsen’s Suite for Strings, Op. 1, followed by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s “Silouan’s Song.” The Philharmonic will close their half of the concert with Gustav Holst’s 4-movement St. Paul Suite, Op. 29, No. 2.
The Vasa Wind Orchestra will open their performance with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Folk Song Suite. The three-movement work will be conducted by three student conductors: Nick Mason, Daniel Leifermann and Matt Bauer. Conductor Karrin Meffert-Nelson will then move to the podium and direct David Maslanka’s “Golden Light,” “A Movement for Rosa,” written by Mark Camphouse and conclude with Dana Wilson’s “Shortcut Home.”
Saturday’s performance by the Gustavus Philharmonic and the Vasa Wind Orchestras will be presented free and open to the public. The performance will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall.
