The Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College will present its annual Brassworks concert on Sunday, December 11, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Bjorling Recital Hall on the Gustavus campus. Under the direction of Professors Scott Moore and Matt Wilson, several brass ensembles will take part in this season ending performance.
More than fifty students will be performing in Sunday’s concert. Some of these students are music majors, are involved in a number of ensembles and are studying privately with faculty in the department. Others are majors from other departments, but come to Gustavus with music backgrounds and wish to continue to be involved with music performance at some level. These chamber ensembles give all these students the opportunity to continue to play and to perform master works composed for small ensembles.
The Gustavus Trombone Choir, directed by Scott Moore, opens the afternoon performance with Salvation is Created by Pavel Tchesnokov and Bosco Rosco by Tommy Pederson. The Gustavus Horn Choir, under the direction of Matt Wilson, will follow with a work by J. S. Bach, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, and G. F. Handel’s Allegro Moderato. The Christ Chapel Brass then take the stage to present the four-movement Suite from the Monteregian Hills by Moley Calvert.
Following intermission, the Gustavus Horn Quintet opens the second half with Kerry Turner’s The Casbah of Tetouan before the Trombone Choir returns to perform works by Eric Ewazen and John Henry Hopkins. The Gustavus Brass Choir will present Robert Elkjer’s Coventry Carol/Carol of the Bells before being joined by the Christ Chapel Brass Giovanni Gabrieli’s Canzon Quarti Toni to finish the concert.
Brassworks is open to the public at no charge. The performance begins at 1:30 p.m. in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall.
