The Department of Music at Gustavus is pleased to present a faculty recital by its horn instructor, Melissa Morey, Saturday, October 17 at 1:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. Ms. Morey, a member of the Mélange à Trois Trio, will be joined by the other members of the Trio, Cara Wilson, violin and Stephen Self, piano, for this recital. Admission is free and open to the public.
For this recital, Melissa Morey and Mélange à Trois will open with a three-movement trio by Hermann Schroeder, Zweites Klavier-Trio, followed by Halsey Stevens’ Sonata for Horn and Piano. They will finish the first half of the recital with a new work, Reflections 1 for Violin, Horn and Piano by St. Paul native Isaac Roth Blumfield. Blumfeld, a student at St. Paul Central High School, is a five-time first-place winner of Minnesota Music Educators Association composition awards, an MMEA Composer of the Year, and a three-time Schubert Club Composer Mentorship participant. The trio will return to the Björling Recital Hall stage following intermission to conclude the recital with the Trio in Eb Major, Op. 40 for Piano, Violin and Horn by Johannes Brahms.
Melissa Morey is a free-lance horn player, singer, and teacher who holds a Master of Music degree in horn performance and pedagogy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree (with departmental distinction) in vocal music education from St. Olaf College. Morey has performed in numerous professional vocal and instrumental groups throughout the Twin Cities region, most notably the Minnesota Orchestra, Dale Warland Singers, and The Singers: Minnesota Choral Artists. In addition to her teaching responsibilities at Gustavus, Melissa serves as principal horn for the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, and teaches at her home studio, Mt. Olivet School of Music, and Concordia University-St. Paul.
The Mélange à Trois Trio served as the Ensemble in Residence for the Schubert Club’s 2014-15 Composer Mentorship Program and performs regularly throughout the Twin Cities region. The trio’s repertoire includes well-known works of the horn trio genre but the ensemble strives to bring contemporary horn trios, such as Blumfeld’s Reflections, to audiences and to commission new works.
This faculty recital featuring Melissa Morey, horn, and the Mélange à Trois trio will begin at 1:30 pm. on Saturday, October 17 in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. Tickets are not required and admission is open to the public.
