Student Recitals Fill Weekend at Gustavus

The Department of Music at Gustavus is pleased to announce three recitals which will include work by four students this weekend. The arts schedule includes a joint recital by Bailey Hilgren, oboe & Paige Schoenherr, bassoon, and solo recitals by Karin Dye, viola and Lisa Slaikeu, flute and voice. These recitals will be presented in Björling Recital Hall and are free and open to the public.

Bailey Hilgren, oboe and Paige Schoenherr, bassoon, will open the weekend of recitals at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, November 21 in Björling. Their program will begin with Bach’s Concerto in G minor, followed by Georg Philipp Telemann’s Sonata in F minor, Six Metamorphoses after Ovid for Solo Oboe by Benjamin Britten and Sonate by Paul Hindemith. The recital will conclude with Francis Poulenc’s Trio pour piano, hautbois et basson.

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, violist Karin Dye will present her senior recital accompanied by pianist Beth Winterfeldt. Karin will open her recital with cellist John Baron performing Beethoven’s Duet for Viola and Cello in E-flat Major. She will continue with the Capriccio for viola, Op. 9 by Henri Vieuxtemps before bringing a small string and wind ensemble to the Björling stage as she conducts the Octet in F Major by Franz Schubert. Karin will finish her recital with Mark Summer’s Julie-O and Cesar Franck’s Sonata in A Major for Violin and Piano.

Senior Lisa Slaikeu will present her flute and voice recital in Björling Recital Hall at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, November 22. With pianist Bonnie Jorgensen, Lisa will begin with Handel’s Sonata III in G Major and two works by Gabriel Faure, Pavanne and Sicilienne from Pelléaus and Mélisande. Pianist Renee Yong will then join Lisa on stage to perform two movements from John Rutter’s Suite Antique before Lisa continues with Let It Go and Handel’s Lascia ch’io pianga. This recital will conclude with Sager and Foster’s The Prayer, with vocalist Peter Burch, and Shannon LaBrie’s Calls Me Home.

The three student recitals this weekend will be presented at no charge. They are open to the public. Performances are scheduled to begin at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
