Dr. Justin Knoepfel, a member of the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College, will present a faculty viola recital on Saturday, February 27 at 3:30 p.m., accompanied by pianist Beth Winterfeldt. This recital will be performed in Björling Recital Hall and will be free and open to the public.
To open this recital, Dr. Knoepfel will play “O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde gros” for viola and piano by Johann Sebastian Bach followed by Michail Glinka’s Sonata for Viola and Piano in D minor. Before he takes a short intermission, Knoepfel will perform Franz Schubert’s Litany for All Soul’s Day and conclude his recital with a performance of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Sonata for Viola and Piano, Op. 147.
Justin Knoepfel joined Gustavus in 2009 and teaches viola, music theory, music history, string techniques, and is the conductor of the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra. He graduated from Luther College with a degree in violin performance. Two years later he received his Master of Music degree in viola from the University of Minnesota. Most recently Dr. Knoepfel received a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in viola performance and a secondary emphasis in music theory at the University of Minnesota’s School of Music. In addition to his work at Gustavus, Dr. Knoepfel is principal viola of the Mankato Symphony, substitute violist with the Minnesota Orchestra and the Minnesota Opera Orchestra. He has performed throughout the United States and in Europe at such venues as Konzerthaus Wien, Orchestra Hall, Ordway Center, Le Jeune Lune Theatre, Bethel University, University of Minnesota, St. Olaf College, Carleton College and Luther College.
Saturday’s faculty recital by Justin Knoepfel will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
