Busy Weekend of Student Recitals Ahead at Gustavus

A busy weekend of student recitals at Gustavus Adolphus College signals the beginning of an increasingly busy last few weeks of the spring semester. Five solo and one shared recital will fill the weekend in Björling Recital Hall with music as varied as piano, voice, oboe, trumpet and trombone. All of the recitals to be presented this weekend are free and open to the public.

Soprano Hannah Jakel will open the weekend with her junior recital at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 15. With pianist Bonnie Jorgensen, Hannah will present three sets of songs which include Mexican folk songs, French “Melodié,” and American Art Songs. She will finish her recital with two selections from the musical Jekyll & Hyde.

Senior Elizabeth Sherman will begin her piano and trumpet recital at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 16 in the Björling Recital Hall. Beth will present solo and accompanied works (with Szu-Ling Wu, piano) in a varied program on piano and trumpet that ranges from Mozart, Liszt, Handel and Schubert, to contemporary works by Astor Piazzola, Joseph Turrin and Otto Ketting, and a Luther Henderson arrangement for brass quintet of the American spiritual, Amazing Grace.

Pianist Emily Rudquist will present her senior recital following Beth Sherman at 3:30 p.m. on April 16. Emily will open her recital with Bach’s French Suite No. IV and follow with Chopin’s Scherzo No. 2 in B-flat minor  and Serge Prokofieff’s Sonata No. 7, Op. 83. She’ll conclude her recital with the Litany “In Memory of Michael Vyner” by Toru Takemitsu.

The weekend continues in Björling Recital Hall at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 17 with a senior oboe recital by Rebecca Ihnen. Accompanied by pianist Beth Winterfeldt, Becca will begin her recital with Solo de Concours by Charles Colin, Dreams by Ryan Main and Sonatina for Oboe and Piano by Malcolm Arnold. With the help of fellow musicians, she will continue with the Oboe Quartet in F Major by Mozart and end with Emile Paladilhe’s Solo pour Hautbois.

Lindsey Taylor, viola and Lili Rothschild, mezzo-soprano, will present their shared junior recital at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. With pianists Beth Winterfeldt and Emily Rudquist, the two will present a program that opens with Brahms’ Sonata No. 2 for Viola and Piano, Bach’s Magnificat, and continues with selections by Rebecca Clarke, Ambroise Thomas and Frank Bridge. They will end their recital with performances of selections from Broadway musicals Into the Woods, Cinderella and Tangled.

Senior music major Cory Lau will conclude this busy weekend of recitals with his bass trombone recital at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 17. Cory will be accompanied by pianist Szu-Ling Wu as he opens the recital with Robert Spillman’s Concerto for bass trombone and piano, followed by the Concerto for Tuba by Ralph Vaughan Williams. With trombonist Caleb Likely, Lau will continue with Charlie Small’s Conversation for Tenor and Bass Trombone. Cory will complete his senior performance and the weekend of recitals with Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s None but the Weary Heart and the Concerto in F for Bass Trombone and Piano by Ernst Sachse.

The public is cordially invited to attend the weekend’s performances in Björling Recital Hall. Each recital is free and will be followed by a recital to honor the musicians.
