For the fall concert by the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band and the Adolphus Jazz Ensemble, the members of the ensembles will welcome saxophonist Dave Camwell to the Björling Recital Hall stage. The Fall Jazz Concert, beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 13 in Jussi Björling Recital Hall, will include performances by the two ensembles directed by Dave Stamps and John Engebretson. Tickets are not required. All are welcome to attend.
Dr. Dave Camwell is a distinguished, versatile and dynamic performer. He has been a Yamaha Performing Artist since 2004, a Rico Artist since 2009, and currently serves as Associate Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at Simpson College, Indianola, IA. He earned degrees from the University of Calgary (B. Mus, dual degree in Jazz Studies and Education, in collaboration with Jacksonville State University), the University of Northern Colorado (M. Mus, dual degree in Performance and Education), and the University of Oregon (D.M.A in Performance with a secondary emphasis in Jazz Studies). Since 2008, Camwell has released three CDs on the Innova and Teal Creek labels – Aeterna (2008), Bach Centric (2010), and the eponymous Oasis Quartet (2011). Each of these CDs has garnered considerable critical acclaim. He also writes a regular column for Saxophone Journal and has recorded two CD master classes for the publication – John Anthony Lennon’s Aeterna (March/April 2007) and Mozart’s Dissonance Quartet (January/February 2010). The Mozart Dissonance project garnered Camwell Simpson College’s Distinguished Faculty Research Award in May, 2010.
Camwell will join the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band, under the direction of Dave Stamps, in the second half of Sunday’s concert. The concert will open at 1:30 p.m. with the Adolphus Jazz Ensemble, directed by John Engebretson, performing Superstition (Stevie Wonder & Mike Tomaro), Moten Swing (Buster and Benny Moten), and Spain (Chick Corea). They will continue with ‘S Wonderful (George & Ira Gershwin) and God Bless the Child (Arthur Herzog & Billie Holiday), before concluding their performance with Coconut Champagne (Denis DiBlasio).
The Gustavus Jazz Lab Band will be joined by Dave Camwell and will open with a composition by Director Dave Stamps, Singapore Strut, followed by Stolen Moments (Oliver Nelson), and Bli-Blip (Duke Ellington) with vocalist Preston Schlueter. They will continue with Antonio Carlos Jobin’s Girl from Ipanema, Mike Tomaro’s Blues for Hire, and The Point of No Return, composed by Eric Richards.
The Sunday, November 13 fall jazz concert by the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band and the Adolphus Jazz Ensemble and featuring guest artist in residence Dave Camwell will open at 1:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required for this performance.
