Gustavus Strings Set for Two Concerts on Sunday

The string students in the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College will be busy on Sunday, December 11, as they present two concert in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. Beginning at 1:30 p.m., Dr. Justin Knoepfel and the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra and the Baroque Quartet will present their winter concert. At 7:00 p.m., two string quartets will bring their talents to the Björling stage for the final ensemble performance of the year. Both events are free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.

Conductor Justin Knoepfel and the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra will open the afternoon concert with Karl Jenkins’ Palladio and Peter Warlock’s Six Italian Dances. The Baroque Quartet will then move to the stage to present the four-movement Quartet in D minor by George Telemann. The full ensemble will then return to the stage to conclude the concert with Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite for String Orchestra.

The String Chamber Ensemble concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. The string quartet of Caitlin Steffen, Michael Gutman, Lauren Lowe and Chris Heller will open the first half of the performance with Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in G Major. The quartet of David Nelson, Lindsey Taylor, John Baron and Emily Sasik will perform The Piano Quartet in G minor, K. 478, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as the second half of the evening concert. These quartets are coached by Justin Knoepfel and Esther Wang, both members of the music faculty.

The two performances at 1:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 11 in Jussi Björling Recital Hall are free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.
