A full weekend of senior recitals will be presented by the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College beginning Friday, April 20 through Sunday, April 22, in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. The six performances include both instrumental and vocal recitals and are free and open to the public.
The weekend opens Friday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. with a performance by Noah Mirovsky, euphonium. Mirovsky will be accompanied by pianist Nathan Kennedy and will present works by Phillip Sparke, JosephDe Luca, Joseph Barat and others.
The schedule for Saturday, April 21, begins at 1:30 p.m. with a senior trombone recital by North Dakota native Sarah Demke. Accompanied by pianist Nathan Kennedy, Demke will perform works by Gustav Mahler, J.S. Bach, Paul Hindemith and Launy Grondhal.
The afternoon continues at 3:30 p.m. with the senior trumpet Chris Fogderud and pianist Nathan Kennedy. Fogderud will present works for trumpet from the 17th Century through today. He opens the recital with works by Giuseppe Torelli and Johann Nepomuk Hummel, and continues with selections by Hindemith, Turrin and Malcolm Arnold. Mr. Fogderud concludes his recital with a selection from Bernstein’s West Side Story and An Elizabethan Songbook by Eric Ewazen.
Saturday continues with a vocal recital by soprano Lisa Skarbakka at 7:30 p.m. With St. Peter accompanist Bonnie Jorgensen, Skarbakka will present a program which includes works by Mozart, Grieg, Thrane, Britten and will conclude with Schubert’s Der Hirt auf dem Felsen with clarinetist Rebecca Palermo.
Josh Wahlstrom, senior percussionist from Hastings, opens Sunday’s schedule in Björling Recital Hall at 3:30 p.m. with pianist Nathan Kennedy and fellow members of the College’s percussion ensembles and the Gustavus Jazz Combo. Wahlstrom’s program includes works for xylophone and timpani, a marimba quartet of Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium, along with two jazz standards with the combo.
The final event of the weekend features Ryan Ike in his senior piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Ike opens with Poulenc’s Mouvements Perpetuels and two intermezzos by Johannes Brahms. The recital continues with Kabalevsky’s Sonata No III, Op. 46 and concludes with Aaron Copland’s Billy the Kid.
This weekend of recitals is free and open to the public.
