Music of Japan Comes To Gustavus

The Music of Japan: The Past into The Future, a concert of traditional and modern music from Japan, will be presented by vocalist Mika Kimula, bamboo flutist David Wheeler and pianist Yumiko Oshima-Ryan in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall on Friday, October 13, beginning at 7:30 p.m. This performance is part of a guest artist residency by Kimula and Wheeler and is sponsored by the Gustavus Artist Series, the Diversity Center, the Dean of the Faculty and the Office of International Education.

Family Weekend Showcase Concert Set for Sunday at Gustavus Adolphus College

The annual Family Weekend/Homecoming Showcase Concert at Gustavus Adolphus College is set for Sunday, October 8, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. This concert features mini-performances by the Gustavus Choir, the Gustavus and Vasa Wind Orchestras, the Lucia Singers, the Gustavus Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras. Sunday's Showcase is presented in conjunction with Family Weekend, but is free and open to the public.

Ensemble Concerts Set for Weekend at Gustavus

Three ensembles from the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College will present their spring concerts this weekend. The Gustavus Chamber Singers and the Adolphus Jazz Ensemble combine efforts on Saturday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. and the department's brass ensembles will perform for the annual Brassworks! concert on Sunday, April 30 at 1:30 p.m. Both performances are in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall.

Gustavus Presents Home Concerts of Symphony and Jazz

The Department of Music presents the Home Concerts for the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra and the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band as the ensembles return from their annual spring break concert tours. The Symphony, under the direction of Warren Friesen, open the weekend with a 7:30 p.m. concert on Friday, April 7. The Jazz ensemble and director Steve Wright will follow with their home concert and guest trombonist Dave Graf on Saturday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall.

Kroumata Percussion Ensemble at Gustavus

On April 2 & 3, the internationally acclaimed Swedish percussion ensemble Kroumata will be in residence at the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College. On Monday evening, April 3, Kroumata will present a concert in Jussi Björling Recital Hall beginning at 7:30 p.m. With underwriting provided by the Ethel and Edgar Johnson Endowment for the Arts at Gustavus, this concert is free and open to the public.

Gustavus Artist Series Hosts American Horn Quartet in Concert

The Gustavus Artist Series continues its 2006 season with a performance by the acclaimed American Horn Quartet, Friday, February 24, beginning at 8:00 p.m. in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall. Recognized as one of, if not the, finest horn quartets in the world, the American Horn Quartet will be in residency at Gustavus Adolphus College from February 22 - 25 and will present a clinic and the concert on February 24. Tickets are on sale at the Gustavus Ticket Center, 507-933-7590, and at the door.

Gustavus Adolphus College Presents Brassworks in Concert

The Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College will present its annual Brassworks concert on Sunday, December 11, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Bjorling Recital Hall. Under the direction of Professors Scott Moore and Matt Wilson, the Gustavus Trombone Choir, Horn Choir, Christ Chapel Brass, Horn Quintet and Brass Choir will take part in the season ending performance.

Gustavus Premieres Beautiful Savior Commission

On Friday, November 18, the Gustavus Wind Orchestra from Gustavus Adolphus College will premiere a newly written work, commissioned by the College and based on the hymn tune, Beautiful Savior. The new work, Light of My Soul, was written by David Gillingham and commissioned for the ensembles' 2006 Eastern European Concert Tour. Friday's concert in Christ Chapel begins at 7:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Gustavus Choir Presents Spring Concert Sunday

The Gustavus Choir, under the direction of Gregory Aune, will be joined by a chamber ensemble to present its spring concert, Sunday, May 1, beginning at 7:00 pm. in Christ Chapel on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus.
