Soprano Christina Smith to Present the Music of Stephen Sondheim at Gustavus Posted on October 8th, 2004 by

Smith, an adjunct instructor of music at Gustavus, developed a passion for the music of Stephen Sondheim after being cast in a production of SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM fifteen years ago. While rehearsing the music, she had an opportunity to study it and became fascinated with Sondheim’s ability to incorporate a wide variety of musical styles into his compositions, while maintaining the nuance that is unmistakably “Sondheim.”

Working with pianist Bonnie Jorgensen, Ms. Smith produced this recital which includes a variety of Sondheim’s music. Works on this program include SEND IN THE CLOWNS, BROADWAY BABY, MORE and SOONER OR LATER and others. The list of musicals includes INTO THE WOODS, FOLLIES, COMPANY, SWEENEY TODD and A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM.

Saturday’s performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Anyone with a love for musicals from the stage to the big screen will enjoy this evening of the music of Stephen Sondheim.
