The Luleå Youth Chamber Orchestra of Luleå, Sweden, performed in Christ Chapel during Morning Worship, Wednesday, April 8, as part of its concert tour of the upper Midwest. Directed by Monika Jonasson, the chamber orchestra presented Stefan Nilsson’s Gabriella’s Song and Jean Sibelius’ Andante Festivo.

The Luleå Youth Chamber Orchestra is one of two string orchestras at the Culture School in the city of Luleå on the northern coast of Sweden. The school is funded by the municipality and is an arts resource for all of the city’s schools from preschool through high school with the mission of integrating the arts (music, dance, drama, visual arts) into the school’s daily work. With the support of the city, all activities and lessons at Luleå Culture School are offered free of charge and without audition.

As part of the visit and performance at Gustavus, the members of the orchestra will participate in a master’s class with visiting assistant professor of music Brian Buckstead, attend a rehearsal by the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra as it prepares for its home concert on Sunday and tour the campus.

This visit to the campus was sponsored and hosted by the Department of Music and the Office of Admission.
