OcTUBAfest

The unusual, yet annual, OcTUBAfest returns to Gustavus Adolphus College on Friday, October 29 and begins at 7:30 p.m. in  Björling Recital Hall. Directed and organized by low brass instructor Paul J. Budde, OcTUBAfest includes solo performances by five Gustavus students on tuba or euphonium.  The performance is free and open to the public.

Friday’s concert opens with tubist Ian Shay performing Alec Wilder’s Suite No. 1 for Tuba and Piano, known commonly as the “Effie Suite” and is followed by Matt Erdal with Selected Vocalises for euphonium by composer Marco Bordogni. The program continues with Joseph Horowitz’s Euphonium Concerto, performed by Brian Westerbur, and Antonio Capuzzi’s Andante and Rondo with tubist Jill Smith. The concert concludes with the Euphonium Concerto by Vladimir Cosma, presented by Beth Hauer.

This year’s performance is dedicated to Harvey Phillips, legendary tubist and teacher who passed away on Wednesday, October 20, at the age of 80.

Friday’s OcTUBAfest is free and open to the public. It begins in Björling Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.
