Sarah Jabar ’10 Finding Her Rhythm
Graduating from Gustavus in May didn't mean that choreographer/dancer Sarah Jabar would be leaving dance behind as she ventured into the "real world." Quite the opposite, the 2010 graduate and Plymouth native, with majors in psychology and dance, has found her way into Minnesota's thriving dance and theatre community and the time to continue to build on the skills she developed as part of Gustavus' very successful dance program. This summer she will be found dancing at the Fringe Festival (August 5-15) and at the Bedlam Theatre (August 19-21).
Grinding, Welding and Lots of Bronze
For the second year, senior philosophy major and musician Alexander Legeros left the Gustavus campus and returned home for the summer to work in his father's business -- something not altogether unusual for a college student. For Legeros, however, that means packing his books and his bassoon and trading them for grinders, welders, hearing and eye protection and bronze. Lots of bronze. The family business, Nicholas Legeros, Inc., is owned and operated by Alex's father, sculptor Nicholas Legeros (Gustavus Class of 1977).
Hagberg Awarded McKnight Composition Fellowship
Singer/songwriter Neal Hagberg, Class of 1981, has been awarded a McKnight Composition Fellowship for 2010. Rarely given to a singer/songwriter, Hagberg received the $25,000 fellowship to "continue and expand the creative work he has been doing with his solo cd project It's Not As Simple As It Seems." This is Hagberg's second McKnight Fellowship. The first, a McKnight Performing Artists Fellowship, was granted in 2003 to the Neal & Leandra (Leandra Peak, Class of 1983) duo.
Aune to Lead Wisconsin Honors Choir
Dr. Gregory J. Aune Dr. Gregory J. Aune Dr. Gregory Aune, long-time conductor and artistic director of the Gustavus Choir, has been selected by the Wisconsin State Music Association as conductor of the 2010 Wisconsin Honors Choir. The 102-member State Honors Choir includes students from across Wisconsin who were selected by audition as part of the WSMA State Honors Music Project which is nationally recognized as one of the finest choral opportunities for high school musicians.
Nimmo Invited to Exhibit Art Furniture at Summer Art Fairs
Now that another school year is complete, long-time conductor of the Gustavus Wind Orchestra Douglas Nimmo, has a list of summer projects. In addition to getting to projects around the house and yard and spending time with wife Ginny and daughters Andrea and Beth, Professor Nimmo has time scheduled for his wood shop and exhibiting his hand-crafted art furniture at art fairs around the state. On June 4, 5 & 6, you'll find him, and his work, at the Edina Art Fair at 50th & France.
Symphony Presents Season Finale “Midsommarvaka” Saturday
The Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, with the assistance of the Gustavus Choir and concerto competition winners Abbie Johnson, piccolo and Scott Simpkins, bass trombone, present the department's season finale with a performance in Christ Chapel on Saturday, May 29. This performance, conducted by Gregory Aune, is part of the College's Commencement Weekend festivities and begins at 8:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
Recital Season Ends with Flourish at Gustavus
The second weekend in May proved to be a big one for the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College as a series of six student recitals and one orchestra concert filled the weekend and Björling Recital Hall with music. Included in the schedule was the final performance of the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra and recitals by vocalists Benjamin Mordecai, Larissa Bregenzer, Kathryn Casey, Zachary Coles, Alyssa Hansen and clarinetist Elliott Crouch.
Time to Soar: The Gustavus Dance Company in Concert
The Department of Theatre and Dance at Gustavus Adolphus College is pleased to present Time to Soar: The Gustavus Dance Company in Concert. This dance concert, directed by Michele Rusinko and Melissa Rolnick, features an exhilarating and diverse range of faculty, student and guest choreographed pieces. Performances will be held in Anderson Theatre May 14 and 15 at 8:00 p.m. and May 16 at 2:00 p.m.
Gustavus Brassworks! Concert Set for Sunday
The Department of Music at Gustavus presents its annual Brassworks! concert on Sunday, May 9, beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. This event includes performances by the Gustavus Trombone Choir, the Gustavus Brass Choir, the Horn Quartet, the Gustavus Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble and the Christ Chapel Brass. The concert is free and open to the public.
Lucia Singers Mothers’ Day Concert Sunday
The Lucia Singers under the direction of Patricia Snapp will present its annual Mothers' Day concert on Sunday, May 9, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The performance is free and open to the public.
