John Engebretson, Faculty Saxophone Recital

The Department of Music at Gustavus welcomes adjunct professor of music John Engebretson in a faculty saxophone recital on Saturday, March 12, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Mr. Engebretson is accompanied by pianist Beth Winterfeldt for this recital in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.

For his program, Mr. Engebretson will open with Distances Within Me by John Anthony Lennon, followed by Piece en forme de Habanera composed by Maurice Ravel and Hard by Christian Lauba. Following intermission, the recital continues with the Fuzzy Bird Sonata by Takashi Yoshimatsu and Bach’s Suite No. 1 for ‘cello, transcribed for saxophone by Jean-Marie Londeix. The performance concludes with Robert Muczynski’s three-movement Sonata, Op. 29.

John Engebretson is in his fifth year teaching saxophone at Gustavus.  A native of Alexandria, Minnesota, he is a 1991 graduate of Gustavus, having studied with Brad Hanson.  Upon graduation, he studied with Jean-Marie Londeix at the Conservatory in Bordeaux.  He continued his education at Northwestern University, studying with Fred Hemke and earning a Masters degree in Saxophone Performance, as well as a Masters degree in Music Education.  He is also currently Director of Bands at Kennedy High School in Bloomington, Minnesota, where has been for seven years.  He has performed throughout the country at saxophone conventions and with various groups in the Twin Cities.

Saturday’s faculty saxophone recital by John Engebretson accompanied by pianist Beth Winterfeldt begins at 3:30 p.m. in  Jussi Björling Recital Hall. This recital is free and open to the public.
