The Department of Music at Gustavus opens its fall season with a guest recital by Mankato Violist Tyler Sieh at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 16, in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. Sieh will be accompanied by pianist Beth Winterfeldt for this recital which is free and open to the public.

Sieh will open this performance with Darius Milhaud’s Quatre Visages for viola and piano; and Johannes Brahms’ Sonata No. 2 in E-flat major, Op. 120. Following a brief intermission, he will return to the stage to conclude the recital with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Sonata for viola and piano, Op. 147,

A native of Minnesota, Sieh is currently Viola Instructor at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He has studied with Thomas Turner of the Minnesota Orchestra before attending the Cleveland Institute of Music. He is associate principal second violist for the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, a member of the Augustana String Quartet and performs  across the United States as a member of the U.S. Air Force Strings.

Formerly, Sieh was a substitute member of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Akron Symphony and the Erie Philharmonic while also serving as the principal viola of the Ashland Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Tyler has performed with the National Gallery Orchestra, the Dominion Symphony Orchestra, the Ars Nova Chamber Ensemble, and is a founding member of the Oleana Chamber Players. He has appeared in recital at the Kennedy Center, the Kent Blossom Music Festival and the Round Top International Festival-Institute where he had the opportunity to perform in recital with members of the Minnesota and San Francisco Orchestras, the faculty of the Juilliard School, and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.

Friday’s guest viola recital by Tyler Sieh begins at 7:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.
