The Gustavus Department of Music will present one of its own on Sunday, March 11, as flutist Barbara Leibundguth joins with pianist Esther Wang to present her faculty recital. Leibundguth’s faculty recital begins at 7:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.
Flutist Barbara Leibundguth has performed as principal flutist with major orchestras in Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Omaha and Houston, and was a member of the Minnesota Orchestra for twenty years, including fourteen years as co-principal. A Chicago native, Leibundguth graduated from Northwestern University, and has attended the Marlboro, Blossom, and Grand Teton summer festivals, and has been featured on radio broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion and NPR’s Performance Today.
Sunday’s performance with pianist Esther Wang will open with John La Montaine’s Come Into My Garden and Georg Phillip Telemann’s Fantasia No. 4 in B-flat Major (for transverse flute without bass). Before taking a short break, the duo will perform Sonatine by Walter Gieseking. After intermission, Leibundguth and Wang will return to the Björling stage and present the four movements of Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata, Op. 94.
Barbara Leibundguth’s faculty flute recital with pianist Esther Wang will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall, Sunday, March 11. A reception for the performers will follow the recital in the recital hall lobby. Sunday’s performance is free and open to the public.
