Jussi Björling Recital Hall
As usual, the weekend following spring break opens a busy junior and senior recital schedule in the Department of Music at Gustavus. This year is no exception as seniors Anthony Cesnik, oboe and Andy Phillips, alto saxophone, along with juniors Ben Whalen, trombone and Tim Grev, trumpet, bring their work to the Björling Recital Hall stage. These recitals are free and open to the public.
Anthony Cesnik, a senior chemistry major with minors in music and Scandinavian studies from Rice Lake, Wisconsin, opens the weekend recital schedule with his solo recital on Saturday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. Assisted by Chad Fothergill, harpsichord, Katie Landreville, bassoon, Ben Marti, piano and Kevin Clark, tenor, Anthony has chosen a program which includes works by Antonio Vivaldi, Paul Hindemith, Ralph Vaughn Williams and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He is a member of the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra and studies oboe with Sarah Erickson Lume.
On Sunday, April 15, juniors Ben Whalen and Tim Grev combine talents in a joint recital which opens at 1:30 p.m. Both musicians will be assisted by pianist Brenda Moore. Tim Grev, a music and geography double major, will open Sunday’s recital with Corelli’s Sonata for Trumpet, Two Violins and Continuo and Kent Kennan’s Sonata for Trumpet and Piano. Ben Whalen, a music and religion double major from Middleton, Wisc., has selected Romance for Trombone and Piano by Axel Jorgensen and Sonata for Trombone and Piano by Eric Ewazen. The two performers team up to conclude their recital with Herbert L. Clarke’s Cousins.
The weekend recital schedule concludes with Rochester native Andy Phillips’ senior saxophone recital at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Phillips, a music education major who studies with John Engebretson, will be accompanied by pianist Beth Winterfeldt and assisted by the Gustavus Saxophone Quartet. His program will includes works by Bach, Schumann, Karel Husa, Milhaud, Debussy, Dubois and Roger Boutry. The three other members of the quartet will join Andy to perform his arrangement of Frederic Chopin’s Prelude in E minor.
The three student recitals on the Gustavus campus this weekend are free and open to the public. A reception for the musicians will follow the recital in Björling Recital Hall lobby.
