The 2012 spring concert by the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band and the Adolphus Jazz Ensemble will feature acclaimed jazz pianist Matt Cooper, Saturday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. Directed by Steve Wright, the two ensembles will present a number of solo works as well as selections with their guest artist. The concert is free and open to the public.

For this performance, Dr. Wright has selected works for both ensembles which demonstrate the variety of compositions written or arranged for jazz ensemble. The Adolphus Jazz Ensemble will open Saturday’s performance with one of the director’s compositions, Oodles of Blues, and continue with Mike Dana’s True North, Cole Porter’s It’s All Right With Me, Charlie Mingus’ Jelly Roll. It will conclude its half of the concert with Gordon Goodwin’s Work in Progress and Something Neu by Andrew Neu.

The second half of the program will feature the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band. It will open with Low Down by Thad Jones, Ted Nash’s 5-1/2 Weeks and Warm People by Steve Wright. G Jazz will conclude the performance with Ted Snyder’s Who’s Sorry Now, Bob Washut’s The Taskmaster and Outside, Looking In by Alan Baylock.

The selections featuring guest pianist Matt Cooper will be announced from the stage.
