The 2014 Brassworks! Concert at Gustavus Adolphus College will include two of the most often heard brass ensembles from the Department of Music: the Gustavus Brass Choir and the Christ Chapel Brass Quintet. The ensembles, lead by Conductors Heidi Johanna Miller and James Patrick Miller, will present this joint concert on Sunday, November 16 at 1:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
Under the direction of Heidi Johanna Miller, the Gustavus Brass Choir will open Sunday’s concert with the Chorale: Break Forth O Beauteous, Heavenly Light from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. They will continue with three short pieces from Bartok’s 42 Hungarian Folk Melodies and the Prelude from Georges Bizet’s L’Arlesienne. The Choir’s will conclude their half of the program with the Christensen arrangement of Coventry Carol and Gabrieli’s Canzon Quarti Toni.
The concert will continue with the Christ Chapel Brass Quintet performing Victor Ewald’s Allegro Risoluto from the Quintet No. 2, and David Baldwin’s arrangement of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Rhosymedre. To conclude the concert, the quintet will perform 3 Christmas carols; “Deck the Halls,” “Pat-a-Pan” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”
Sunday’s concert by the Gustavus Brass Choir and the Christ Chapel Brass Quintet will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.
