Sunday Music Includes Woodwinds & Senior Recitals Posted on May 6th, 2016 by

Another busy weekend on the Gustavus campus includes spring concerts and recitals on Sunday, May 8. The afternoon opens with a senior recital at 1:30 p.m. by pianist Shannon Graham, followed by the Woodwind Chamber Ensembles Concert at 3:30 p.m., and a 7:30 p.m. recital by soprano Chelsea Rojas. These three performances are presented at no charge and are open to the public in Jussi Björling Recital Hall.

Shannon Graham will present her senior piano recital at 1:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. She is a senior music and psychological science double major from Appleton, Wisconsin. She has been a member of the Gustavus percussion ensemble for three years, a student accompanist, and member of the Adolphus Jazz ensemble, while also participating as a student researcher in the Social and Cognitive Lab and the Center for Developmental Science. Shannon is a Björling Scholar and studies piano privately with Dr. Esther Wang. Following graduation, Shannon plans on working for a year while applying to graduate school in clinical psychology.

The annual Gustavus Woodwind Chamber Ensembles concert will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Björling. Several ensembles will participate in the performance including the Flute Choir, the Herk de Fire saxophone quartet, Synesthesia woodwind quintet, LTOP, the Gustavus Saxophone Quartet, the Fyra quartet, the Woodwind Quintet, sQuad quartet and the Gustavus Chamber Winds. Coaches and directors for the performance are James DeVoll, John Engebretson, Karrin Meffert-Nelson, Rena Kraut, Melissa Morey and Heidi Johanna Miller.

The evening of music concludes with soprano Chelsea Rojas’ senior recital at 7:30 p.m. She will be accompanied by pianist Ben Marti for the recital. Chelsea is a senior nursing major who will continue her education after graduation and work both nationally and internationally.  She has always loved music and has grown during her four years of vocal study at Gustavus. With the help of her voice teacher, Dr. Patricia Snapp, she has developed a solid understanding of vocal performance and technique. Chelsea is a member of The Choir of Christ Chapel and The College Ave Jazz Vocal Ensemble.

Sunday’s concert and recitals will be presented in Björling Recital Hall and are open to the public. Tickets are not required for any of these events.
