Rudi Thompson Senior Recital Set for Saturday

As part of the 2016 Commencement Weekend at Gustavus Adolphus College, the Department of Music has scheduled a senior clarinet recital by Heather “Rudi” Thompson at 1:30 on Saturday, May 28 in Jussi Björling Rectal Hall. This recital will be accompanied by pianist Beth Winterfeldt and will be presented free to the public.

Rudi Thompson is a senior music education major from Canyon Lake, Texas. During her time at Gustavus, Rudi has played clarinet in the Gustavus Wind Orchestra, Vasa Wind Orchestra, and various chamber ensembles. She played trombone in the Vasa Wind Orchestra and Brass Choir, and sang with the Lucia Singers, serving as assistant director for two years. Rudi has acted as Social Media Chair of the Gustavus Wind Orchestra for three years and has been a co-president of the Kappa Delta Pi chapter at Gustavus, an international education society. Along with her class and rehearsal schedule at Gustavus, Rudi has been the Director of Instrumental Music at John Ireland Catholic School in Saint Peter. In the fall, Rudi will conclude her Music Education degree with student teaching at Southwest High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

For this recital, Ms. Thompson will open with Giuseppe Tartini’s Concertino for Clarinet and Piano, followed by Three Etudes on Themes of Gershwin by Paul Harvey and the Sonata in B fur Klarinette und Klavier by Paul Hindemith. She will then be joined by three fellow clarinetists to perform That’s a Plenty by Lew Pollack, pick up her trombone for a trombone quartet performance of Beethoven’s Drei Equali fur vier Posaune, and conclude by conducting a chamber wind ensemble performing Souvenir De Porto Rico: Marche Des Gibaros by Louis Moreau Gottschal.

Rudi Thompson’s senior recital will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall on Saturday, May 28. The recital will be presented with no ticket required and followed by a reception to honor the musicians.
