Senior Spotlight: Henri Santelman Posted on April 16th, 2021 by

The “Senior Spotlight” series honors graduating fine arts majors for their contributions to the Gustavus community.

Henri Santelman is a music honors and religion double major from Alexandria, Minn. He plans to serve in music ministry in the future. Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Alexandra Bryant has worked with Henri in classes and in lessons. “Henri is raw and real. He is authentic. He is strong, hard-working, genuine, transparent, and honest. He puts his whole heart and soul into everything he does and when it doesn’t feel right, he knows it. He stops, steps back, assesses, and waits until it’s right.” she says.

We asked Henri to give us a little insight into his time at Gustavus and what his future plans are.

How have you grown in your time at Gustavus?

HS: I’ve learned a lot about music, but I think I’ve grown the most in my appreciation for vulnerability in art and music.

What do you look forward to most about life after Gustavus?

HS: Exciting adventures and uncharted territory!

What’s one piece of advice you’d give high school students considering Gustavus?

HS: If you come here, take advantage of the amazing music faculty – they are here to support you and help you chase your dreams! Step out of your comfort zone!

What has been your proudest moment in your time at Gustavus?

HS: Gustavus Choir learning an original piece I wrote for our concert this spring!

What is the most interesting class you’ve taken at Gustavus and why?

HS: It was actually a religion class called “Evil Sin and Suffering” – it addressed the tough questions that I’ve struggled with in my own faith head on and I learned a lot!

What professor has made the biggest impact on you and why?

HS: Dr. Alexandra Bryant – she has supported me through classes, lessons, and my personal faith journey!
