Senior Spotlight: Gigi deGrood

Gigi deGrood is a Studio Art and Art History double major from Edina, Minnesota. In the future she plans to take a gap year, refine her art portfolio, and apply to graduate programs for a Master of Fine Arts degree. Professor Betsy Byers says that deGrood “Gigi oozes style. She brings a mix of humor and dedication to our department. Gigi is one of the hardest working painters I have ever seen and it is obvious when you look at her work.”

We asked Gigi to talk about her time at Gustavus.

What will you miss most about art at Gustavus?
GD: “The faculty.”

What’s a favorite memory you have from studying art at Gustavus?
GD: “Either finishing my first big painting or installing work in the President’s dining room.”

How have you grown in your time Gustavus?
GD: “I have a stronger sense of individuality.”

What do you look forward to most about life after Gustavus?
GD: “Not having homework”

What’s one piece of advice you’d give high school students considering Gustavus?
GD: “Do your homework”

What has been your proudest moment in your time at Gustavus?
GD: “Presidents Art award or homecoming royalty ;)”

What is the most interesting class you’ve taken at Gustavus and why?
GD: “Renaissance and Baroque art history. I love Renaissance art, and Don Myers gives you an in-depth exploration of the topic throughout this class. I learned so much in this class.”
