The Twin Cities Jazz Composers’ Orchestra comes to Gustavus Posted on February 23rd, 2023 by

On Friday, March 3rd, the Gustavus Adolphus College Department of Music will host the Twin Cities Jazz Composers Orchestra in Jussi Björling Recital hall at 8:00 p.m..

Founded in 2017 by composers Aaron Hedenstrom, Asuka Kakitani, Adam Meckler, and JC Sanford, the Twin Cities Jazz Composers’ Workshop was created in order to allow composers to share ideas and learn from each other in a shared space.

The Twin Cities Jazz Composers’ Workshop fosters a collaborative environment by inviting participating composers to engage in discussion and commentary on each others’ compositions.

Participants come from a wide range of backgrounds with varying degrees in writing for large jazz ensembles but they are encouraged to move beyond their comfort zones and to take risks with their writing throughout the workshop. Participating composers also have the opportunity to regularly hear their new compositions read by the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra.

Gustavus is looking forward to the opportunity to host this year’s Composers’ Workshop. The Workshop will take place in conjunction with the annual Gustavus Jazz Jamboree, a non-competitive festival produced by Gustavus that invites six high school jazz ensembles for a day of clinics and interactive learning and performing experiences. The performers in the Jazz Composers’ Orchestra will have the opportunity to work with attending high school students during the Jazz Jamboree throughout the day.

The Twin Cities Jazz Composers Orchestra will premiere original compositions during their performance in Björling Recital Hall on Friday, March 3 at 8:00 p.m.
