The Gustavus Department of Music is pleased to welcome flutist James DeVoll to the campus for a faculty flute recital on Saturday, November 3 at 3:30 p.m. in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall. For this performance, DeVoll will be joined by pianist Kevin Hobbs. This faculty recital is free and open to the public.
James DeVoll is a Gustavus faculty member who teaches flute and directs the flute choir. He joined the staff in the fall of 2011. DeVoll also teaches at the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis and is on the summer staff for the flutist camp Flute Fire in Dallas. He has performed in recitals across the United States and Europe, including performances with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and worked with composers to produce works with the American Composers Forum and the Contemporary Music Workshop. DeVoll studied at both Yale and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and is currently completing his Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Minnesota.
DeVoll has chosen a variety of music to perform in this recital. The recital will open with two works titled Sonata; one by by Otar Taktakishvili and the second by Samuel Zyman. This will be followed by Taffanel’s work Fantasy, and Paganini’s Caprice, Op. 1, written for violin and transcribed for flute by Jules Herman. The recital will conclude with I Will Not Be Sad in This World, by Eve Beglarian.
