The Department of Music at Gustavus welcomes alumnus and adjunct instructor of music John Engebretson in a faculty saxophone recital on Saturday, October 12, beginning at 3:30 p.m. For this faculty recital in Jussi Björling Recital Hall, Mr. Engebretson is joined by two colleagues in the Department of Music, pianist Esther Wang and clarinetist Karrin Meffert-Nelson. The performance is free and open to the public.
For his program, Mr. Engebretson will open with Marilyn Shrude’s Renewing the Myth and “Balafon,” one of the Nine Etudes for Saxophones by Christian Lauba. He will complete the first half of the recital with William Dougherty’s Howl accompanied by “sound modules” which the composer describes as “the manipulation of digital materials.” Following intermission, John will continue with Sonata by Paul Creston and Sharpie by Mark Engebretson, before concluding the performance with Klonos by Piet Swerts.
John Engebretson is in his eighth year teaching saxophone at Gustavus. A native of Alexandria, Minnesota, he is a 1991 graduate of Gustavus, having studied with Brad Hanson. Upon graduation, he studied with Jean-Marie Londeix at the Conservatory in Bordeaux. He continued his education at Northwestern University, studying with Fred Hemke and earning a Masters degree in Saxophone Performance, as well as a Masters degree in Music Education. In addition to his work at Gustavus, John is also Director of Bands at Kennedy High School in Bloomington, Minnesota, where he has been for 10 years. He has performed throughout the country at saxophone conventions and with various groups in the Twin Cities.
Saturday’s faculty saxophone recital by John Engebretson, Esther Wang and Karrin Meffert-Nelson begins at 3:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. This recital is free and open to the public.
